Pickleball was officially founded in 1965 by the Pritchards family on Bainbridge Island, Washington.
One Saturday afternoon, when returning home from a round of golf, Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum, and Bill Bell found their families bored with nothing to do. Being the great 3 dads that they were, they created a new summertime activity by telling the children to take some leftover wooden paddles and a wiffleball out on the tennis court. The dog that also followed, named “Pickles”, who would chase down the ball to steal and bring in the woods. The children had such an enjoyable experience that the adults joined in, hence naming the new game “Pickleball”. Since inception, the Pickleball has aged to be over 50 years old! Year over year, Pickleball is gaining new players and fans of all ages to be recognized as the fastest growing sport in America. According to USAPA.org, there are over 15,000 indoor and outdoor courts in just the United States! Pickleball is year over year being introduced to more middle schoolers and high schoolers in physical education classes.
Pickleball is defined as a paddle sport that was created for people of all ages and skill levels. The rules of pickleball are simple and the game is known for being easy for new players to learn.
